Back Up Hard Drive

Research data on backup hard drive or external drive is often cited by general-interest publications as well as more sophisticated research firms. You can backup software and files and access them from another system. Using a backup external drive is great for people who have too much data to store on disks, but there are definite risks involved in using this method.

Files and Data

Files can become corrupt, which can be due to the way it is configured. Initially setting it to do a full back-up, a user can set it to do a weekly scan for "new and updated files and add them to [my] backup". When looking into the newest set of backup files a user can see copies of files I know I haven't accessed let alone changed, in months based on the settings. It's also great because you can schedule a back up of data the same time, everyday. It also supports playing many formats of video and audio files off of normal USB flash drives and data CDs or DVDs.

Even with such a configuration, it should be loaded because the files can be seen. There are cases where it seems for some reason that the backup program has decided to randomly add files to my backup for no reason.

One time, even though a user has been religiously backing up my hard drive onto external backup drive, after the hard drive crashed I found out that most of my hard drive data never actually got backed up to any of the drive. As any seasoned computer jockey will tell you, data loss is not a question of if but when.

Keep in mind, however, that a backup hard drive is just as susceptible to mechanical failure (and, for that matter, virus and spy ware infections) as your primary drive--all the more reason to adopt more than one backup solution. Also keep in mind that it usually is more expensive use a backup hard drive, which is less savory.

Hard Drive Capacities

Hard drive capacities has been increasing year after year and we are now reaching unprecedented capacities. The question I pose to you is how much space do we really need? My first computer I owned was in 1994. I had a 100mhz computer with 500 MB of disk space with a cost of nearly $3,000. Could you imagine having a hard drive today with 500mb? It did its job back then with only 500MB, but there's no way you could even install an operating system on it today.

6 years later (in 2000) I decided to upgrade my computer storage space. It was a 60GB hard drive that I paid well over 500 dollars for. Yes I know that sounds a bit crazy, but at the time the average disk space was about 10-20 gb, and mine was 3-5 times their capacity. Fast forward to today (another 10 years), you are now able to buy a 1 TB for well under $100. For those that are not tech savvy, 1 terabyte = 1,000 gb.

Do we really need all of this space on our computers? The average computer user will only need a fraction of that capacity and will never even get close to maxing it out. The reason why hard drive space has continually increased is because of the demand for fast broadband speeds. It is now easier to transmit data on the web fast and easy.

Back in 1996, I used AOL for my internet service. One day, I decided to download a file that was roughly 1gb to my hard drive. It was eventually completed but took 24 hours a day for nearly 30 days to finish the download. Compare that to the broadband speeds of today. I am now able to download 1gb file today in less than 1 hour. In additional, watching music videos back then took about 45 minutes to buffer before you could even watch the video. Today, you could just go on YouTube and watch the video as it is streaming in real time. With speeds getting progressively faster and technology increasing rapidly, it was evident that hard drive space needed to be increased.

Music, photos, documents, and especially movies take up a lot of space. Unless new technology surfaces that requires more disk space, I just do not see the need for much further increase in storage capacities. Having huge capacities only creates big headaches. Imagine sorting through 500 TB (500,000 GB) to find one specific picture. It's like looking for a needle in a haystack. No, thank you.

Will Formatting Permanently Erase My Hard Drive?

Selling, recycling, or giving away your old computer? Wondering if simply formatting data will permanently erase your hard drive? Simply formatting data on a hard drive and erasing it is not enough internet security. You need to use disk deleting software to permanently erase data and files on your hard drive.

You can spend countless hours going through your hard drive and deleting all the files and y documents you want. Using your "delete" key on your keyboard in Windows unfortunately basically only removes the shortcuts to the files making them invisible to users. Deleted files still reside in your hard drive. They can easily be recovered using data recovery software, readily available for download on the Internet.

While formatting a hard drive is a little more secure than simply erasing the files, it does not permanently erase the actual data on the disk. Formatting a hard drive only erases the address tables. This makes it much more difficult to recover the files. However, a computer specialist would be able to recover most or all of the data that was on the disk before reformat, using data recovery software. This is wonderful if you have accidentally reformatted a hard drive. On the other hand though, it is not good if you're selling, recycling, or giving away your computer. With your computer in th wrong hands, crooks could steal your identity. This could lead you to becoming the next victim of identity theft, one of the fastest growing crimes in Canada and the USA.

Here's a bit of "food for thought". In 2003, two MIT students purchased 138 used disk drives from various locations. They found more than 5,000 credit card numbers, medical reports, deleted personal and corporate financial information. On top of this the two students found several gigabytes of personal email and pornography on those disks.

To securely erase data and files from your hard drive you need to use a process called disk wiping. This is a secure method of ensuring that data on your computer and other storage devices is permanently deleted. To permanently and securely erase data on your hard drive you need to use disk deleting software, also known as file wipers, shredders, and wipe programs. It is good to know that there is free disk deleting software for download on the Internet.

Disk deleting software overwrites your hard drive with 0's or random patterns. This makes it virtually impossible to recover data and files on your computer using data recovery software.

Apparently, according to an article I read in PC World, some hardware can recover data that has been written over once or twice. That is where secure delete standards, such as the Department of Defense 5220.22-M, comes into play. This specification states that overwriting the drive sector three times with specific, different characters constitutes one pass. Seven such passes are recommended by many Internet security experts to make the data completely unrecoverable.

It is reassuring that to read data overwritten by even the simplest disk deleting software requires expensive hardware to recover, so only the most determined professional sleuth would be able to recover your data.

Diagnostic Tips For Hard Drive Data Recovery

You will be able to decide on recovery options only if you know what exactly is wrong with the disk. There are a few things you can do which would give you a reasonable idea about the nature of the hard disk problem.

Logical problem - if there is something wrong with the boot sector of the hard drive rendering it un-bootable. Boot from a floppy and do a read only scan of the disk. You will be able to decide on an appropriate strategy for fixing the master boot record. If the boot sector is lost then you should be able to decide how to go about recovering the data. If there are bad sectors in the master boot record, then attach the hard drive to another working computer as a secondary hard drive and try to recover data using software hard drive recovery.

Electrical problem - where the circuit board on the hard disk has been damaged due to a higher than allowed electrical current passing through it. Open up your system's ATX cabinet box, take out your hard drive, and closely examine the circuit board under the hard drive. Do not touch the board as static discharge can damage the disk's head. If there are telltale signs of a burnt circuit board or burnt components, then you can decide for sure that it is a board problem.

Mechanical problem - where the head that reads the data stored on the different platters arranged inside hard drive damage or the alignment of the platters themselves affected. The sure sign of a mechanical problem is the clicking sound that you will hear from the hard drive when it is trying to spin up or spin down. If this click sound is coming, then the problem related to mechanical trouble inside the hard disk platter assembly.

Data recovery protection with reasonable degree of success is perfectly possible from a damaged hard disk or other kind of storage media. As long as you have access to internet, so the best policy is to backup the important data on your hard drive so that, you are not left with the costly and time consuming option of data recovery in case of damage to storage media.

Terabyte External Hard Drive Can Benefit You

One thing that we look when purchasing computers nowadays, aside from the power of the processor and memory, is the hard drive. How much do we have? Is this enough to hold my pictures and video clips? A casual computer user who downloads a lot of music and videos can use up space pretty fast and together with faster internet connections, we can download a gig of data in less than an hour. Most new computers comes with a 500 gigabyte drive as a standard and you can upgrade up to 1-2 Terabytes. Just imagine how much drive space we have 10 years ago.

One thing also that we take for granted is that what happens if our computer crashes. There are a lot of software programs out there and some are bundled with anti-virus programs that backups our data at a predetermined time or automatically set when a drive failure is eminent. One of the best way to get our backups is to store it on another portable drive instead of partitioning your current one to put your back up. A terabyte external hard drive fits the bill. It is capable enough to backup your whole drive and then some but you can go over board and get the 2 or 3 terabyte external drive if you wish but at this time, cost can be a factor whereas a 1 terabyte drive will only cost around $100-150.

Most of these portable drives bundles a backup software with the unit, just make sure to set it up properly and to schedule it so as to have a recent backup copy when your current computer drive fails. These are also connected normally using the USB 2.0 ports but some offer a faster firewire or LAN connection. It is also better to separate the main computer and the backup drive so as to prevent losing both of them if a physical mishap like flood, fire, etc. happens.

These terabyte external drives are not only for backups but some people also use it as an external storage of their media files and preventing over crowding of their current drive causing their computers to slow down. They try to keep just the programs on their main drive and anything that they download and upload in their computer goes directly to the terabyte external hard drive.

So how can you find the best deal for the 1 terabyte external hard drives? Just Google it. There are a lot of companies that makes these storage drives but don't try to buy the cheapest one from an unheard company because the saying "you get what you pay for" applies here. Stick with the brand names especially the ones that are known for making hard drives like Seagate, Western Digital and the likes. Also use comparison shopping sites like price grabber or NexTag to get the best price for a given brand and model. Also make sure that store that you buy it from has a good feedback and reputation so as not to have any problems or if any occurs, it will be fixed promptly.

Do Your Laptop a Favor Buy an External Hard Drive

Today laptops are technological wonders. Many of the more expensive models contain much more hard disk capacity than many desk top units of just a few years ago. Working with these new laptops can be a joy. However if care is not used in downloading massive amounts of data, your new laptop marvel may soon turn into a sluggish complaining robot. Before this occurs you should consider purchasing and using one of the new external hard drives.

These external hard drives hold massive amounts of data without complaint. Most are small and compact and will need only a small amount of table top space to be serviceable. Some are not much larger than a good size cell phone. But do not let the size fool you.

Pocket size aluminum units just three inches by five inches and weighing in at a mere five and a quarter ounces have a capacity of 100gb or more. These units are ideal for laptop use. The units connect to your computer through a USB port. This of course means they can be used on any computer you own.

Having data from your main computer available on your laptop while traveling or just working from your easy chair or patio is a simple matter with these units. Simply plug into an empty USB port. The computer will recognize the unit and you will find a notice appear on the computer screen which allows several options. Usually you would choose open and display contents. If your speakers are not muted you will most likely receive an audio alert also.

If size or a little more weight are not a problem for you when traveling there are larger units with massive capacity. One unit with a 500gb capacity is just four and a half inches by eight inches and one inch thick. This type of unit weighs almost two pounds and uses an ac adapter instead of the computers power source. Weight and bulk would be a consideration with these units. Two smaller units may be a better choice for the traveler.

Of course balancing your laptop and an external hard drive on your lap can also be a problem. However if working on a desk or any other surface the additional hard drive space could make the difference between completing a project or putting it off till you can return to your PC.

All in all these small portable units offer the laptop user lots of additional disk space for folders and files or for downloading lots of video or music files for the laptop user who finds the computer a form of entertainment more than a workstation.

Spend just a little time exploring the various models and prices and you can surely find just the right external hard drive for your particular situation.

Hard Drive Maintenance - Basic Knowledge to Maintain a Laptop's Hard Drive

Usually the laptop hard drive is easier to wear out than desktop's. To keep the health and prolong its lifespan, you need to do some regular maintenance of your own. The laptop drive's longevity pretty much depends on your own habit of using a computer. Here are three basic steps you need to carry out regularly to ensure the longevity of your laptop hard drive.

1. Ensure plenty of available space.
It is always a good idea to make sure there is enough free space on the hard drive for saving new large files, you can backup the large file of computer to another medium like CD-R, DVD-R, flash drive, or external drive, because a full hard drive can be wears out much more quickly.

2. Defragment hard drive regularly.
If you have many big files in your computer and they were move frequently, then defragmentation is very important at this point to eliminate the file fragments, it is recommended to do the defragmentation once a week. You can go to Start > Programs > Accessories > Disk Defragmenter to get access to the toolkit, or you can perform fragment analyse first before you decide to defrag a specific drive. The entire process may take more than an hour. If you got a massive drive which exceeds 500G, to get a 3rd-party software like Advanced Defrag, O&O defrag can save you a lot of time.

3. Remove the unnecessary files
Unnecessary files can be easily ignored by PC users, these unwanted files such as cookies which are downloaded without users' knowledge when you surfing the net. Unwanted files can also be the leftover file from uninstalled programs and even erased folders. These files will unconsciously occupy a lot of disk space, and they can slow down PC performance seriously and even bring you various errors, the best way to clean up these unwanted files is to use programs like Registry Easy, you may find the free download resource on this website: http://www.bestregistrycare.com

External USB Hard Drive - What are the requirements?

No matter how hard I tried, I was never able to really keep with the constant progress of technology, as they seem at the time all the new updates. It was impossible to solve until I started and reinforced a lot of time online looking for ways external hard drive that I began to understand what characteristics, what, and, most importantly, what features are a must in any external drive!

The most important and most obvious is the USBConnection port. This connector allows users to connect their computers, external hard drive to their home in order to gain access to transfer files. This, of course, is some, but it was the first of its importance in USB 2.0 is here to understand the connection! Through this interface, you can not access many files stored on the hard drive only, but also powers the system via a connection to the computer at home. After I removed myprevious hard drive and replaced it with my new external USB drive, I was very surprised, wallet, how much energy the previous model sucked my once a month. After only a few months, I have more money is through the power through the interface than I ever could simply by connecting my old template to save the wall.

This brings us to another necessary feature: Energy Star. Energy Star is a particular technology, with your external hard drivebe provided by the computer with power, while at the same time recognize the case after a few minutes or so accessible, so that automatically shifts into sleep mode to save power. This includes my electricity bill charged, even if in small steps, in a very significant way. Now, new external USB hard disk was my slow pays for itself, especially if it was as compared with extra power was sucked from my wallet whilethe old model with an external disk.

Another great feature that has been very necessary for me lately, EMC / HD connection software. This software thus enabling a smooth connection between the external USB hard drive and my computer at home, the time required for the transfer of files has been literally cut in half! Save time save money for me! Except for EMC / HD software is the easiest way to learn is the application, however, that ifYour external USB hard drive is coming! Once I realize that might be really began, has been my experience with increased considerably, as I can make almost all functions that have always been in my nose!
